What Is a Low-Dose CT Scan?

How does it work?

Low-Dose CT Scan

Early Detection and Lower Radiation from Atlantic Radiology Associates

At Atlantic Radiology Associates, our mission is to provide advanced imaging technology that prioritizes both accuracy and patient safety. One of the most effective tools we offer for early detection of lung disease — especially lung cancer — is the Low Dose CT (LDCT) Scan.

Understanding a Low-Dose CT Scan

low-dose CT Scan is a special type of computed tomography (CT) imaging that uses X-rays and computer technology to capture detailed, cross-sectional images of your lungs and chest. What makes it “low dose” is that it uses up to 90% less radiation than a traditional CT scan — while still delivering clear, high-quality images for diagnosis.

This makes LDCT an ideal screening method for patients who require imaging over time, such as those at higher risk for lung cancer.

Why a Low-Dose CT Scan Matters

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States — but when it’s found early, it’s often far more treatable. Studies show that low-dose CT scans can reduce lung cancer deaths among people at high risk by identifying abnormalities at an earlier, more manageable stage.

At Atlantic Radiology Associates, we recommend Low Dose CT scans for patients who:

  • Are between 50 and 80 years old
  • Have a history of heavy smoking (a pack a day for 20 years or more)
  • Are current smokers or have they quit within the past 15 years
  • Have no current symptoms of lung cancer

What to Expect During Your LDCT Scan

When you come to Atlantic Radiology Associates for a Low Dose CT scan, you can expect a fast, comfortable, and noninvasive experience:

  1. No special preparation is typically needed.
  2. You’ll lie on a table that slides through the CT scanner.
  3. The scan itself takes less than 10 minutes.
  4. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly to capture clear images.

Our experienced radiology technologists will guide you through each step, ensuring your comfort and safety. Afterward, one of our board-certified radiologists will carefully interpret your images and send results to your referring physician.

Benefits of a Low-Dose CT Scan

Choosing Atlantic Radiology Associates for your LDCT screening means:

  • Early detection of lung cancer and other lung conditions
  • Significantly reduced radiation exposure
  • Quick, comfortable, and accurate testing
  • Expert interpretation by local, board-certified radiologists

Understanding the Risks

While LDCT scans use much less radiation than standard CT scans, they still involve a small amount of exposure. Occasionally, a scan might show a finding that turns out to be noncancerous — what’s known as a false positive. If that occurs, our radiologists will work closely with your doctor to recommend appropriate follow-up imaging or care.
